Let’s Save Water at Home!

To be able to help in alleviating the ffects of the current water crisis due to the El Nino Phenomenon, here are some practical tips on how to conserve water:

Check your faucets.

Replace worn-out rubber stoppers and check the pipes, toilet fixtures and other water connections in your home for any leaks. To check for leaks, turn off all your faucets and check your water meter. If the meter is till running, you’re wasting water. Call your plumber to fix any remaining leaks in the system.

Don’t leave water running.

Don’t leave your faucet open when brushing your teeth or filling up containers.

When washing your hands or face, use a basin instead of leaving the faucet running.

Don’t waste water when washing your car. Instead, simply use a rag, a pail of soapy water and a pail of clean water.

When you have a chance, after your car has been washed down by rain, wipe it dry (with a cottong cloth of course) to prevent the dirt from crusting.

The driveway? Don’t hose it down, use a broom.

Don’t leave the hose running - jet sparys or water hoses waste a lot of water.

Maximize your laundry water. Wait for a full load of clothes before doing the laundry and soak them for a while in sopay water to make washing easier.

Minimize the use of showers , especially during peak times of the day.

When taking a bath, simply use a pail and "tabo" as this will save more water.

Check the water level in your toilets.

Don’t flush toilets unnecessarily; each flush uses several liters of water. Place a plastic bottle filled with water in the water tank of your toilet. This saves 20% of the water you’d normally need for a single flush.Of course, the best would be to install low-flush toilets.

Don’t let the water in your toilet tank rise above the overflow level; adjust the float arm to the proper level to avoid overfilling.

Place a brick or a rock inside the toilet tank to displace waterl; this will reduce your water consumption.

Never use running water to soak and soap your dishes, use a basin or fill up the sink halfway.Turn on the tap only when you are ready to rinse.

Greasy plates are easier to clean if you soak them first in hot water.

When cleaning fruits and vegetables, use a basin or a partially filled sink.

Water your garden or lawn during the cool part of the day, early morning or late afternoon; don’t water during windy days.

Consider plants for your garden that don’t require a lot of water.

Grass doesn’t need a lot of water. Water is required when the tops of the leaves develop a black tinge, recovery is almost immediate when you water it down at this stage.
